There is a battle royal taking place on the premier web forum of the 9/11 'Truth' movement. The brainchild of graphic designer Roger Peters aka dz, and one of the site's four administrators, 911blogger is riven by a quarrel that is setting normally placid 9/11 Truth bedfellows at daggers drawn. The cyberspace is thick with accusations of 'shilling ' - speaking on behalf of the PTB (powers-that-be) or covertly supporting the OGCT (Official Government Conspiracy Theory - the one about 19 Arab hijackers overcoming the combined defences of the US of A one bright September morn).
The cause of all this internecine nastiness is a well-presented 6 part study by Dr Judy Wood, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University, entitled 'The Star Wars Beam Weapon', which argues that the Twin Towers may have been felled with 'exotic' weapons instead of , or in addition to, conventional explosives, as is widely believed by 'Truthers' to have been the case. There is ample evidence of the readiness of such weapons for battle , and unconfirmed talk of their use in the Iraq conflict, so you would have thought such a theory would not meet with open hostility from at least half of the 911 warriors.
Enter Professor Steven E. Jones, late of Brigham Young University and the uncrowned king of 9/11 Controlled Demolition theories. Jones, a mild-mannered physicist with the air of one who is faintly embarrassed by his own celebrity status, has suddenly been thrust into the role of Keeper of the Holy Grail of 9/11 Truth , on account of his as yet unpublished work promoting the hypothesis that Thermite , in combination with Sulfur, was responsible for cutting the core columns of the Trade Center's Twin Towers and thus initiating their catastrophic collapse.
While awaiting the publication of his paper, in which he is expected to describe experiments using reclaimed steel from the towers that contained traces of Thermate ( Thermite mixed with Sulfur), Jones has explicitly
ruled out other popular theories, including the use of lasers, or to use their technical term, Directed Energy
Weapons. Lest he be accused of trying to strangle the opposition to his theory for reasons of professional one-upmanship, it must not be overlooked that Jones comes to the 9/11 truth arena with a background of research involving new sources of energy, some of it carried out at Los Alamos national laboratory , the very place where Beam Weapons have been developed. This striking coincidence does not , it seems, trouble our loyal Truthers, who have invested the bashful Jones with a near-Messianic role in the fight for truth. It would therefore seem churlish to mention one other little-advertised interest he has. Among his published papers is one called, somewhat startlingly, ''Behold My Hands: Evidence for Christ's Visit in Ancient America'' . This is now unavailable on the net; perhaps he wisely thought that it might lower his credibility a fraction with those who see him as the embodiment of cold, clinical science. It would be unlikely to deter some of Dr Jones' more uncritical acolytes.
The battle lines are now so firmly drawn that there seems little chance of mass conversions in either direction. As one who keeps an open mind on the exact means of the Towers' demolition, I would welcome clarification from Dr Jones that his aversion to the work of Dr Wood does not compromise his authority as Most Trusted Upholder of the Sacred Flame of 911 Truth.
The reason for the dispute is simple: Judy Woods states that the buildings came down faster than free fall and uses this as justification for the concept that something other than explosives was involved. One presumes that this "something" pushed downwards on the buildings, increasing the effect of gravity.
Unfortunately for this nice idea measurements show that the buildings came down significantly slower than free fall.
It is not surprising that Prof Jones wants to distance himself from Judy's assertions and prefers to claim that the evidence is compatible with the use of explosives.
The plain fact is the buildings came down too slow for Judy and too fast for the official story. Somewhere in between lies the truth.
